Student Festival Ceilidh | Glasgow Dance | New Scotland Annual Dance

Rukkus Student Festival Ceilidh

By Rachael

I think the best way to comment on the Rukkus ceilidh is to say that it was an eventful evening for all of those involved in the organisation (and that's putting it very politely). What exactly should a committee do when they arrive at a ceilidh only to find that two bands have been booked for the evening? Panic? Faint? Run for it?

When it came down to it, the general plan was to refuse to cancel Andy Kain (of course!), panic a little, have an argument with the ENTs crew who were trying to cancel the ceilidh class, try not to get really annoyed at the VPSA (it wasn't really her fault), curse lots about the VPS and give daggers to the 'other band' who were rude enough to play their instruments right the way through ceilidh class.

Slight technical problems aside, Andy Kain really was on form, and I think I can speak for all the New Scotlanders when I say that the first half of the ceilidh was excellent. The Orcadian Strip the Willow was the best I've ever witnessed: a real musical 'two fingers' to the other band (who claimed to be the best in Scotland!).

I can't comment on the standard of the other band as I'm afraid I toddled off home as soon as I could to escape the stress but I can't see that it was a good thing to try and ceilidh dance to an events band. Perhaps I was wrong.

Glasgow Dance 2006

By Catherine

On 18th February, a group of New Scotlanders made the short trip through to Glasgow for their Annual dance. We were not disappointed, with a very enjoyable programme, and great music from Alastair Wood. One of the highlights of the evening was a chocolate fountain at dinner time - we all danced the second half with chocolatey smiles on our faces!

New Scotland Annual Dance 2006

This year's annual was held at James Gillespie's as usual. Lively music from Ian Thomson and his band and a fantastic programme written by Yoshimi ensured that we had a great night, and we were pleased to be joined by lots of visitors from Glasgow and further afield. The delicious buffet which Henri had arranged for people to bring was very welcome in the interval of an energetic programme, with the usual abundance of chocolate. There were also lots of nice dresses to admire, several of them handmade - NS members are getting creative these days! After the dance, we all collapsed in a heap at Anna's for the after-dance party.
