Freshers' Weekend 2007
2-4 November 2007
Every year, New Scotland heads for the hills for a weekend of dancing & fun! Come along and learn some new moves, play some silly games, enjoy the highland scenery, and get to know everyone a bit better!
This year, we'll at New Lanark. It is a World Heritage Site so we can guarantee it will be beautiful, we are near the Falls of Clyde and is a perfect chance to go over and see a bit of the West of Scotland. You will see lots of Highland tours, this is a chnace to go and see a less invaded but still worth seeing bit of scotland.
This year's highlights will include:
Dance Workshops: Scottish Country - Scottish Step - Highland
So you can try out all that we have to offer.
Plus: Chippy supper - Silly Games - Icebreaker ceilidh – Hallowe’en Costume Dance - Group Activity - Free time in New Lanark.
Hallowe’en Theme
This is a chance for you all to explore the dark side of things, unleash your werewolf, avoid the daylight with the vampires or go hunting for brains as a zombie. So be creative as there will be prizes. Scare or be scared.
Money Stuff
Price includes accommodation, transport, workshops, activities, and meals from Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch, plus tea/coffee & snacks. You'll need to bring money for the bar and anything you might want to buy in new Lanark.

- Non-Student/Waged: £40
Space is limited, so ensure your place now! If you can't make it to a class before 11th October or for other inquiries, please contact nscds @ ed . ac . uk (no spaces). Please sign up ASAP -- Deadline is 11th October.
Dancing
All the classes are designed for complete beginners, so don't worry about being able to keep up. They're meant to be a taster for styles you haven't tried, or a review of styles you have tried. And most of all, they are FUN!!
Outdoor Activities
Weather permitting, we'll be doing a bit of walking and fun stuff outside.... Please make sure you bring warm clothes, sturdy shoes, and waterproofs. More on what to bring below.
Costumes
Saturday night's dance theme is Hallowe'en, so you can show off your imaginative skills with a great costume! But make sure you can dance in it! It's easy to trip on long skirts or crash into people due to reduced vision (both of which I've done in the past!) Saftey first.... There will be prizes for the best costumes....
Kitchen Duty
Everyone is expected to help with kitchen duty, both preparing food and cleaning up. Split between 60 people, though, it's not that much work, and it can actually be quite fun! There will be a rota when you arrive so you can see when you're on duty.
What to Bring
- cool clothes & soft shoes for dancing in
- warm clothes, solid shoes & waterproofs for walking in
- if you have them: hard-soled shoes for step dancing
- an imaginative costume for Saturday night (hallowe'en theme!)
- a torch if you don't like walking in the dark
- any medication you need (obviously)
- CDs, musical instruments, etc. for the late-night festivities, if you want
- biscuits/cakes/fruit that can survive a bus journey (grapes, apples, melon, etc) to contribute to the communal stash
- a good sense of humour!!
